Stigmatization | Surviving after Detention | Absent Justice

Even after being freed, the detainees still suffer. They survive torture, interrogation, imprisonment, hunger, and brutality, but come home to harsh judgment from others

The stigma of being untrustworthy or impure stays with them, as coworkers and extended family or friends doubt and question them.

They are not free even though they are no longer detained. How can they feel normal or free when people around them are cruel and distant?

The women especially have difficult times readjusting, as they face questions and scrutiny about their purity and loyalty.

This is such a heartbreaking situation, and a bitter reality for those who manage to leave Assad’s prisons alive.
