Major Earthquakes Hit Turkye and Syria – Again!

Major Earthquakes Hit Turkye and Syria – Again!

On Monday, February 20, 2023, two more large earthquakes struck southern Turkye and northwestern Syria starting at 8:00 PM local time. Magnitudes 6.4 and 5.8 with the epicenter being near the southern Turkish city of Antakya (below the Defne district of Hatay). Worst hit, once again, the Hatay province in Turkye, and the northwestern region of Syria. It was also felt in Egypt and Lebanon.

Terrified people jumped from buildings, and stampedes were reported in both countries as panicked people tried to run from the stricken areas. Fortunately, not all had returned to buildings that withstood the first large earthquakes that occurred on February 6th (exactly two weeks earlier, killing over 46,000 and displacing a million people).

So far, 130+ injured have been reported in northwest Syria, with 6 deaths and 294 injured in Turkye. Some reports claim that more buildings have collapsed, and there are some people buried under the rubble from these latest collapses.

Citizens in Turkye were warned to stay clear of the coastline for fear of a tsunami, and asked not to enter damaged buildings.
